DAILY NOTES

In the spirit of the Motto, the explanation of DeChiaro is far from encouraging for
the  future of PdD - and does not make that system better cognoscible and/or more manageable. The model he uses is far from Storms' nano-crack hydroton model.

Other: Jean Francois' theory breakthrough paper has a more direct title now, it is not more-or not only about "Energy Creation" but about "Reverting the Burden of Proof of the Non-Existence of LENR to Orthodox Physicists"  A bright idea but the orthodox physicists have many methods of self-defending, Teflon brains is only one the invincible ones.

Critical conditions needed for LENR aka Cold Fusion

From Louis DeChiaro
He discusses the atomic vibrational LENR initiation mechanism.
There is a lengthy list of prerequisite conditions for successful LENR.

1. It is necessary to set up conditions favoring the formation of molecular hydrogen (H2 or D2) inside the solid lattice for a certain range of possible values of lattice constant and for some fraction of the allowed values for electron momentum. This condition alone rules out almost ALL the elemental , because the electron density is just too large to permit molecules to form, except near vacancies in the lattice where a metal atom is absent.

2. The overall hydrogen loading fraction (ratio of hydrogen to palladium atoms, for example) must exceed the minimum threshold of about 0.88, otherwise the “party” never even gets started. Achieving this level of loading in Pd is not trivial.

3. Conditions must be set up (by appropriate choice of materials parameters and achieved by the right kind of alloying) so that these hydrogen molecules can be caused to break up and then re-assemble very rapidly in a periodic time sequence when an appropriate physical quantity such as background electric charge, magnetic field, etc. is made to oscillate periodically over a small range.

4. The critical value of lattice constant at which this break up and reassembly occurs must lie very close to the nominal value of lattice constant for which the ground state energy of the lattice is minimal. This requirement alone rules out essentially all of the elemental lattices and about 99% of the binary and ternary alloys.

5. A departure from equilibrium must be established that will permit an external energy source (eg. the DC power supply in an electrolysis experiment and/or a pair of low power lasers as in the Letts/Hagelstein two laser experiment) to feed energy into the H-H or D-D stretching mode vibrations.

6. The nature of the lattice must permit these stretching mode vibrations to grow so large (over a period of perhaps many nanoseconds) that their amplitude becomes comparable to the lattice constant. When this occurs, the H atoms oscillate so violently that at the instants of closest approach, the curvature of the parabolic energy wells in which the atomic nuclei vibrate will become perturbed

7. When the curvatures of the parabolic energy wells of the nuclei are modulated at a frequency very near the natural resonant frequency, the quantum expectation value of the nuclear wave function spatial spread will oscillate with time in such a way that the positive-going peaks grow exponentially with time.

This was verified by doing a direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger Equation for a single nuclear particle in a parabolic energy well. These oscillations in spatial spread will periodically delocalize the nucleus and facilitate the tunneling of adjacent nuclei into the Strong Force attractive nuclear potential well, giving rise to nuclear fusion at rates that are several tens of orders of magnitude larger than what one calculates via the usual Gamow Factor integral relationship.

Almost none of this material was obvious back in 1989. Without knowing what one is doing and why it works, the probability of achieving successful results via the so-called Edisonian method of trial and error is disappointingly low. Reasonable scientists and engineers can be forgiven for their difficulty in believing that there might exist ANY circumstances under which such things could be possible. And to be blunt, it was only in the last few months that the causal chain finally became clear.

The Naval Research Labs (NRL) ran over 300 experiments using pure Pd cathodes, all of them yielding negative results. Then somebody suggested that NRL should try an alloy of 90% Pd and 10% Rh. The very first such alloy cathode they tried yielded over 10,000 Joules of excess thermal energy – all from less than 1 gram of cathode material. I ran Density Functional Theory simulations on that alloy, and it, too, satisfies all the conditions given above, while pure Pd and pure Rh do not.

DAILY NOTES

The most successful publication is still Louis DeChiaro's IEEE presentation. It has a broad echo and it is doing a lot of good for the future of LENR.
Mats Lewan says about his Brussels speech at Full Circle who (citing Mats)  "knew very little about the topic, so it was mostly a general orientation containing no news for this who follow the area.
I don’t think I can say something useful or interesting about it.
However, I did talk with some people in the EU administration, at the General Directorate for Energy, and although I expected no action from their side I might have been able to raise some awareness, which might be useful one day."

05 OCT 2015 RESEARCHERS WITH A GREEN FINGER; INFO

MOTTO

The first responsibility of a leader is  to define reality. (Max Depree)

DAILY NOTES

This time Bob Higgins was very fast and has made n perfect translation of the new positive replication paper coming from Moscow.

Thoughts inspired by the new paper:
You know how essential is to have "a green finger" to a gardener. In the very practice of research. both scientific you are learning fast that some researcher own this quality and some not. It is a very subtle connected in strange ways to the qualities and virtues of the workers. Rational, non-rational, irrational elements are determining successes and more important, constancy of success in this creative activity.
I hope many young researchers with with green fingers will join our community. Years of very intensive research activity are coming.

SUMMARY OF STUDIES

The Progress Reports have revealed some important behaviors having a relationship to attempts at replication and to the various proposed theories. Its time to put these behaviors in context and suggest some conclusions.  If you are tempted to speculate on your own, please read the reports first and make yourself knowledgable about what has been observed in other studies published over the last 26 years.  We now have enough information, when considered in its totality, to arrive at some very firm conclusions.  Progress will be made only when this understanding is accepted and used as a guide to support additional understanding. We do not need to keep reinventing the wheel.  As anyone who is familiar with the many observations will understand; the conclusions noted below are totally consistent with past observed behavior. The only conflict is with the past conclusions. Many of these past conclusions are now shown to be wrong.  I suggest we need to start getting rid of the dead wood.

1. The LENR process is not initiated when a sample of Pd is initially loaded to high composition.  Additional treatment is required to cause the LENR process to start. Once this additional treatment is successful, LENR will take place over a very wide range of deuterium concentration, even after all D is removed and the sample is again reacted with D.

2. Only certain batches of Pd can be activated. One of the requirements for successful activation is lack of significant excess volume formation when the Pd is reacted with D.

3. Excess power produced by an activated sample is very reproducible once it is initiated as long as the surface is not removed. This behavior is consistent with the surface being the location of the nuclear reaction based on the behavior of helium release.

4. Once the LENR process starts, the amount of current applied as electrolytic current has no effect on the amount of excess power produced. Only the temperature of the active surface has any effect on excess power production, with higher temperatures producing greater excess power.  We can assume that once a sample is activated, simply exposing it to D2 gas and heating it would cause excess power production.  In other words once the sample of Pd is activated, use of electrolysis is no longer necessary.

5. The activation energy for excess power production based on the temperature effect is similar to the value for the activation energy for diffusion of D in PdD. We can assume excess power production is controlled by how fast the D can diffuse from the surrounding lattice to the NAE where the nuclear reaction occurs.

6. So called life-after-death will result in eventual destruction of the sample if the temperature is not controlled, as some people have observed.  In other words, the system suffers from positive feedback as Rossi has also experienced using the Ni-H2 system. This positive feed back is generally not observed because the amount of power produced relative to the rate at which it can be lost is small.

7. Once the role of electrolytic current is understood, the F-P method can be seen to have the same basic behavior as all methods found to initiate LENR, including the Ni-H2 system. In other words, no reasons exists based on observed behavior to consider the Pd-D2 system different  from the Ni-H2 system. Only the reacting isotopes are different which naturally would produce different nuclear products.

All of behaviors and conclusions resulting from this study are consistent with the Nano-crack theory I proposed.  Most other proposed theories are not consistent with all the observations and conclusions.  These conflicts need to be resolved for any progress to be made.

Regarding:

"Now in his EuroPatent that was revoked it is written:
The transition metal can be selected from the group comprised of: Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Pd, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Ag, Cd, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, lanthanoids, actinoids. Such metals belong to one of the four transition groups"

Good engineering requires that there is a match between the metal selected for use in the reactor and the frequency of light produced or used inside the reactor that is optimally reflected by that metal.

For example. nickel, zirconium, or titanium is best for infrared light. A reactor whose operating temperature is about 600C can use nickel best.

Gold and silver are best used in a reactor that produces visible light. A laser that produces visible light is best used to stimulate these precious metals.

Palladium, platinum and iridium is used best in a reactor that uses ultraviolet light. Light at that wave length is produced by a very high temperature reactor whose operating temperature is about 1500C. Or in the case of laser stimulation(as per Holmlid), a laser in the UV range will product the best stimulation.

It is bad engineering to use noble metals in a low temperature reactor.

If we want to design a reactor that uses a refractory metal like tungsten, we must test that metal to see what type of light is optimally reflected by that metal to see if it is compatible with the heat range of the reactor we intend to design.

Theory establishes the engineering guideline concerning the match of the reflective properties of the metal to the optimal black body temperature range of the reactor being designed. In this regard, the correct theory of LENR is important to direct the proper engineering guidelines used in building a reactor. Random selection of a substrate metal will lead to uncertain reactor behavior.

02 OCT 2015 LENR METALS LIST? INFO

MOTTO

No one ever achieved greatness by playing it safe. (Harry Gray)
LENR is great(ness) too

DAILY NOTES

20 years from now, there will be on the market many kinds of LENR + devices , working with more LENR metals. How many, which ones? Some 6 years ago, Francesco Piantelli has told me: "all the metals from the four transition metal groups are able to work, more or less" and gave some examples of well working metals.
Now in his EuroPatent that was revoked it is written:
The transition metal can be selected from the group comprised of: Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Pd, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Ag, Cd, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, lanthanoids, actinoids. Such metals belong to one of the four transition groups - more details given.
Andrea Rossi speaks about fewer LENR metals- recently the list was Ni, Pd, Pt if I understand correctly.
I hope Piantelli is  right and I have all the scientific and moral reasons to believe him.
For the sake of LENR's great future, I hope such fine metals as W and Zr or Cr (Stoyan Sarg's favorite) will work perfectly at industrial level. By the way the central part of my Global LENR Research plan is the testing of a great variety of LENR metals.
If LENR+ is based on nano-clusters and surface dynamics than all transition metals can work.

So far I am not able to add other considerations and Prof. Cook and I are continuing our theoretical research. Obviously, he is much better than me, but integrating his theoretical background and my experimentalism we will arrive to write something useful, I think. We have also decided to write nothing else before we can say something conclusive.
He too, as me, is a warrior and he too, as me, hates the coffee shop chattering wherein elementary particles are treated like metal spheres of a pin-ball: “the proton goes here, smacks the Li target and makes a lot of heat, then an electron is captured and bla, bla, bla…”. We want to reach a solid reconciliation with a rigorous mathematical structure.

DOUG MARKER COMMENTS ABOUT COMMENTS

Below is an interesting set of posts on a forum run by CF Woodford Equity Income Fund. They were the fund that Tom Darden mentioned as adding additional; funds in support of his IH fund for investment in new energy opportunities and research.

HERE: https://woodfordfunds.com/focus-on-long-term/#comment-6294

When one reads the posts, up pops Mary Yugo (aka Potenza, Hody etc: etc: ) and some other likely aliases and companions of his.

What we see is Woodford politely advising the 'why invest in quack science' enquirers, that they Woodford have done their own due diligence on the matter - exceeding 2 years effort. But still those intent on shutting down any attempt at reasoned investigation, have no hesitation in attacking the actions of both Woodford and Tom Darden at Industrial Heat. The attacks belie the reality that investment funds do evaluations of potential new breakthrough science and make decisions on investing. It is what they do.. Yugo not content with letting IH or Woodford do the jobs they exist for, seeks to undermine their raison d'etre.

Whilst the level of insults were kept low at the Woodford blog site. I have seen and read as recently as a week ago where Yugo (aka Potenza) labelled Tom Darden, in a public forum as an idiot (he repeats this often).

This is what anyone who shows interest in LENR can expect if such interest is public and can be attacked on the net.

Based on 32 days functioning of the Rossi reactor radical changes in the  isotopic
ccomposition of lithium and nickel. Plus to Li, Ni and and Al in the starting material there were found: C, Ca, Cl, Fe, Mg, Mn however no observable quantities of these elemnts were observed in the exhausted fuel.
The production of excess heat in the reactor  AP2 (the author's)  was 40 times less than in the Rossi reactor. Probably this is the reason for less changes in the isotopic composition. It can be seen only a small increase of the 6Li/7Li ratio. It was produced a significant increase of Cr, K, Si, Na, Mg,
Cr, K, Si, Na, Mg, Ca. The contents of Mn, Cl,Zn, Cu, Al have decreased
For the Chinese reactor it had been seen the decrease of the content of 6Li a difference to the Rossi and the Ap2 reactors
The production of excess heat in the GS3 reactor is hundred times smaller than in the Rossi reactor and there cannot be remarked changes in the isotopic compositions of Li and Ni
