SEARCHING FOR EGO OUT ASSOCIATES

 I want to make EGO OUT a more agile and more complete source of LENR news
in the spirit of instant and immediate information worldwide. I am searching 
for close collaborators - later blog associates, partners. In order to compensate the disadvantages of a round planet with time zones (I am at 2 hours later than Moscow and 2 hours earlier as Paris) so for Europe it is OK.  I am interested first in colleagues from the Far East (Japan, China but India too) and in North & South America. The Internet cannot replace completely geographical position. It is also about information from primary sources and pre-publication information, direct discussions,  phones to authors and researchers, meetings, serious rumor.
Please write to: peter.gluck@gmail.com for discussing the principles of collaboration.
This initiative is based on the prediction that next year there will be at least 5-10 times more LENR news daily than now. I also hope  this will solve the problem of blog heritage and EGO OUT will continue when I will be busy applying what I have learned from the Phoenix Birds.

AUG 24, 2015 NICE INFO AND AN ANTROPOMORPHIC METAPHOR FOR LENR

I have never had the slightest doubt that Cold Fusion- LENR exists. If you examine my old cold fusion "personal history" writings you will see that actually my technological optimism has predicted it. When something is born with such terrible delays and difficulties in a "one step forward, two steps back" as Hot Fusion technology- then human creativity will necessarily find an alternative way.
The advent of Cold Fusion went very badly, in my opinion mainly because its striking otherness- it is not a mild form of hot fusion- was not recognized. nor from outside, neither from inside. Plus it was discovered in a system and in circumstances in which it can happen rarely and in an underdeveloped form.
So immediately, cohorts of angry physicists have denied its very existence- and this continues sporadically in the present. LENR is a subject much to great and complex to be let in the hands and brains of nuclear physicists- they use a false identity of LENR to justify its killing.

Times are changing: during a very recent dispute on a LENR forum the old problem of the existence of cold  fusion/LENR it was seen that the existence of Cold Fusion is not a problem more. As Edmund Storms, who beyond of being an all round expert in the field has an admirably consistent  CF/LENR system of thinking-philosophy - has
stated: "We now need to address the real questions in a rational way."
This has inspired me to tell you what I think.
To be or not to be, to exist or not, is indeed a question too small for LENR. A question that deserves a clear Mu answer- an answer much greater than the frame of the question. See please about Mu:

 Mere existence of LENR is actually not relevant at all. What counts - and here I am forced to use an antropomorphic metaphor- the question is if LENR is LIVING, that is is growing, improving, developing, multiplying, diversifying- all these in some useful way as a source of energy. See the Mottoes.
On EGO OUT I have told you many times about the role of metaphors in thinking, about their important functions- expressive, exegetic, explanatory and exploratory in management- metaphors can be really useful in understanding complex and even weird issues. As you can see from the references, anthropomorphic metaphors are "special" and you have to use them with much care. However it is not great philosophy to distinguish between an "only existent" and a really living LENR system. Living LENR  systems now have to fight for survival- violent death is very frequent. Just existent systems an exhibit some zombie type features.

 During my life I had good ideas and some very bad ideas. The worst was probably inspired by the movie: "The young Tom Edison"(1940): I have synthesized tri-nitro-glycerine in my "lab". You have to add very slowly a mixture of concentrated nitric and sulphuric acid to glycerine on an ice bath. I had luck anf survived.
But now I have an even more idea re. LENR: living LENR systems  result from activating hydrogen and making the metal receptive. (the DGT principle). Many possibilities for hydrogen, however with metals it is more difficult. What is worse 
perhaps it is absolutely impossible to obtain living LENR systems below a critical temperature- according to Piantelli's teachings this is the Debye temperature of the metal. Pernicious idea I accept= it can be about the surface dynamics that creates
active sites on the lattice of metal; it could be called the "Surfdyn curse"
Ed Storms Michelson-Morley type experiment can demonstrate the contrary- it could
show that temperature is not determinant and there are low temperature living (and prospering) LENR systems too. Then PdD wet systems still can have a future.

Based on your response, I gather the 1MW eCat line and the eCat X line will be independent. Each line will grow and be modified as the market dictates. This assumes:

a. You have sufficient manufacturing capabilities to independently produce each line to the level the market requires.

AUG 23, 2015- LENR COMMENTS AND INFO



DAILY NOTES

More than any other signs, symptoms, allusions to the improving popularity of LENR- the number of malicious sites having "LENR" "E-Cat" and especially 'Bill Gates interested in LENR" in the titles is increasing more and more. LENR becomes attractive, but still superficially attractive.  Searching for LENR implies some new risks. But its impact on the price of oil is unchanged- zero.

 Andrea Rossi- says his company and Industrial Heat have a perfect relationship, that's good. He also says LENR is physics- physics from the good textbooks- this is clever  diplomacy and scientific correctness; just I don't believe the most smart and beautiful models of nucleons and nuclei have helped him to solve the problems of his E-Cats.
Andrea Rossi has not answered a question regarding the differences between the old and the new E-Cats. He will not answer but we could ask him more directly how are the things changing when we go from the 400C E- Cats to the 850 C Cats to the 1200C Cats and now to the 1450+C E-Cats X? 
There will be no answer either but the question is more complete. He could give a general-in-principle answer as not changing much or radically changing against or in the very spirit of my surface dynamics is doing the main job in LENR idea.

 Slowly slowly the Summer is ending and we will have more news from LENR-land.

I want to give you a suggestion, though: in your years of education in the high school, it is better that you study the basics of Physics as they are in the text books your Professor has chosen to teach the matter. First, learn the bases as well as you can, let alone for now the LENR. Don’t put the cart ahead of the horses. Study as much and as well what your Professors teach to you, for now.
I don’t think is a good idea to study LENR in High School; I think it is much better you study as well as you can the matter as it is explained in the textbook, because it is contingent with your actual level of preparation.

The key component in the Ni/H reactor LENR reaction is the production of topological polaritons or as they have been newly named “Topolariton.”. Science has thus caught up with LENR in tht these quasiparticles offically dubbed topological polaritons have made their debut in the theoretical world.

The tools that Condensed-matter physicists often turn to are particle-like wave form entities called quasiparticles—such as excitons, plasmons, magnons—to explain complex phenomena seen in the solid state. Now Gil Refael from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and colleagues report the theoretical concept of the topological polarition, or “topolariton”: a hybrid half-light, half-matter quasiparticle that has special topological properties and might be used in devices to transport light in one direction.

This one way propagation is a critical revelation that explains how topolaritons arise from the strong spin based coupling of a photon and an exciton, a bound state of an electron and a hole. Their topology can be thought of as knots in their gapped energy-band structure. The nickel microparticles used in the Rossi reactor design provides topological one dimemsional nanowire structures from whic  topolaritons emerge, these knots unwind and allow the topolaritons to propagate in a single direction down the nanowire without back-reflection. In other words, the topolaritons cannot make U-turns. Back-reflection is a known source of detrimental feedback and loss in photonic devices. The LENR centric topolaritons’ immunity to back-reflection may thus be exploited to build long lived aggregates of topolaritons with increased performance. 

The paper by Gil Refael explains where the spin of these topolaritons come from and why they last for so long. In this newly released paper, these researchers are strugling to produce and use Topolaritons, but LENR inventors have been at this business for decades. It is promising that science is catching up with this everyday world of LENR.

The interaction between light and matter can give rise to novel topological states. This principle was recently exemplified in Floquet topological insulators, where classical light was used to induce
a topological electronic band structure. Here, in contrast, we show that mixing single photons with excitons can result in new topological polaritonic states — or “topolaritons”. Taken separately, the underlying photons and excitons are topologically trivial. Combined appropriately, however,they give rise to non-trivial polaritonic bands with chiral edge modes allowing for unidirectional polariton propagation. The main ingredient in our construction is an exciton-photon coupling with
a phase that winds in momentum space. We demonstrate how this winding emerges from the finite momentum mixing between s-type and p-type bands in the electronic system and an applied Zeeman field. We discuss the requirements for obtaining a sizable topological gap in the polariton spectrum, and propose practical ways to realize topolaritons in semiconductor quantum wells and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

EDITORIAL (vaguely related to LENR)

 It is about the town in which I live- from 1980- a local pro-culture initiative: 
"Romanian city offers free rides to people reading on the bus". Cluj- my wife, my daughter and my three grandchildren all where born here.
I thank to this nice readers that he has noticed this news and have to confess that
I would not remark something similar if it happens in Miami_ I have never visited that town- the closest proximity I have been to it, was in 1997 when at Sarasota, Fl I was at a great fallen Cold Fusion star, James Patterson, Still at 325 miles from Miami. I remember reading some very good papers in Miami Herald- is this correct, sometimes I remember not only the things what have really happened for blogging that is OK.
Yes Cluj is a living active town with universities, theaters operas,music, good restaurants and the best public services in this country; Internet connection is at a very good level I have followed the development closely- working at ISPs from 1999 to 2011. But you know well no town is perfect and we all here have lived in a very bad and oppressive communist society and the Twin Peaks principle is very strong ("The Evil is indestructible, always wins- but changes it form. It can soften if you have great patience)
About the initiative- it is nice, creative, but must be very temporary because town buses are expensive. We have learned that free things can be damned expensive
actually and socially. Dishonest people everywhere are the first to take the profit. 
Nobody will start to read books just to travel freely with the bus- by the way the buses are usually so crowded that you cannot read there.
BOOKS! So many things have changed. When I was a young child we had a very great collection of classic books, with beautiful covers. We were forced to sell them
when my father was arrested; we succeeded but I remember the antiquarian made 
a big fuss that we dare to offer him such reactionary books as Netochka Neznanova by Dostoyevski and L'Immoraliste by Andre Gide it is his duty to report such crimes to the Securitate. This was in the 50'ies.
Some 20 years later it was a huge production of books- ugly paperback mainly, but cheap and available- we had a great personal library at home. Despite oppression
and dictatorship- it was a resistance by culture. TV was used mainly for dumbing down. It was some selection, completely idiotic books were not printed except the political ones.
Today we entered the era of the E-book but a lot of beautiful, expensive books on paper are edited and printed too. Selection? I bet that >80% of the readers younger than 35 years have never heard or read the word kitsch.
The E-book will dominate but I do not see this as a great tragedy. Tempora mutantur.
Culture, Education, Science- we speak a lot about the inner weaknesses of these.
But the deadly enemy of culture is counterculture(s), education and school are destroyed by counter education in myriads of forms.
So many forces are fighting with Science and Reason.
We live in very interesting times. We are IT semi-gods, in 10 years we shall be new energy (specifically LENR) semi-gods, however- I repeat it- the 21st Century is the 12th, resurrected.

 I have asked Ed for some details and here is his answer (thanks for the permission to share them  with the readers):

 You ask good questions, Peter.  

As you know, I believe cracks of a very critical gap are required.  Such gaps are formed by stress relief at weak sites in the material.  Pd is known to produce cracks, but their gap is too large to be active most of the time.  To be made active, the surface of the Pd is normally modified by alloy formation during long duration electrolysis. These alloys change the stress and the local strength, therefore modify the gap width of any cracks that form.  This process is impossible to control. Consequently, I'm attempting to produce alloys that have the required properties in advance of electrolysis.  

All materials expand as hydrogen accumulates in their crystal structure. This expansion causes the stress that generates cracks. Pure palladium expand a lot, hence produces so much stress the resulting cracks are too wide.  An alloy that expands less and has many weak sites in its structure is required. Two alloys having such characteristics have shown especially good reproducibility. These are the Pd-Ag and the Pd-B alloys. Many other active alloys are expected to exist, but have not been explored for lack of funding.  However, the exact composition and the reason for this good behavior have not been explored.  I'm attempting to find the best composition and the reason it is the best.  Minor impurities in such alloys have no effect because the properties are totally controlled by the amount of the second element in the Pd.  Nevertheless, many variables control the properties of the structure and are hard to control.  Hopefully, forming the "correct" composition will produce material with greater reproducibility than any other material even though the material is not perfect. At this stage, we are not looking for and can not expect perfection.

 Discovering deeper and subtler sense(s) of concepts

 As told, before Rossi's LENR+ event/revelation in Jan 2011, I have worked for 8.5
years as editor of a web-search journal at the leading local Internet Service Provider. News -a broad range from the Web ..Science, Technology, Art...To Gastronomy and recipes, selected papers about Management and Motivational- translated in Romanian. But I have decided to have a personal- if possible creative contribution- a "voice." Exactly as now, when the aim of EGO OUT is to write about the latest LENR news, fast, but I start in expressionist style telling what I think about the situation, problems, trends and perspectives of LENR. Expressionist because it does not impress my readers too much and the old Cold Fusion LENR myths stay undisturbed.
Ok, I wanted to write Editorials and it was a long range actions- hundreds of them. I have excluded ab ovo politics and local events- the competition was terrible and also
any form of spirituality- as subjects. I discovered that rethinking all kinds of concepts
with the help of the Internet could be the way- and it really was something challenging and captivating, kind of personal intellectual Renaissance. The tasks for old fighters who have nothing more to lose- must be infinite and impossible and this was- however I have applied the method for more than 300 important concepts.

 Many times this was a revelatory, illuminating mental process how from the
original raw , everyday sense of a definition I could advance to superior, enriched
specific subtler understanding, to a larger vision, deeper, philosophical understanding of a concept. One of the best examples was Complexity about which I spoke yesterday.  
A saying about metaphor (that was also subject of an analysis-synthesis) is:

 Abstract: 
Recent advances in scientific understanding of high-temperature materials processing using novel experimental methodologies have shed light on the complex role of surface and interface phenomena. New in-situ studies on molten metal/solid ceramic interactions using a unique experimental complex at the Foundry Research Institute, Krakow, have revealed a number of unusual observations in materials processing at high temperatures. We present some such unusual observations and their explanation with reference to liquid metal processing of Al, Ni, and Ti, and their alloys in contact with oxide ceramics. In particular, we focus on the following aspects: primary oxidation of Al from residual water vapor or oxygen, capillary purification to remove surface oxide, substrate protection by CVD carbon, roughening due to spinel whisker formation, inclusions in castings due to mechanical detachment, floatation due to buoyancy forces, and segregation due to directional solidification, modification of the solid surface morphology by metal vapor ahead of the liquid, and the complication due to multi-component alloys melted in crucibles made from complex oxide-based ceramics. In the case of Ti, rapid reactions with oxides result in undesirable volumetric changes that create diffi culty in casting high-quality Ti parts, particularly by investment casting. Nanoscale (e.g., colloidal) coatings based on Y2O3 protect crucibles and hold ladles against such attack. Practical insights and recommendations for materials processing emerging from the fundamental studies on high temperature interfacial phenomena have been described.

As I already have recommended the hottest E-Cats would go the best with Starlite- the material invented by Maurice Ward *see Wikipedia) but this not available. In my good days I could help out Rossi with high tech ceramics but now I am forgotten
by all chemists colleagues.
The molten metal-ceramics material contact inside the reactor/cell must be well known and managed.
However I have  as soon I have seen the many damaged, burnt, broken Parkhomov cells I have imagined that wireless cells should be immersed in a molten metal
bath. As long time admirer of the Pilkington float glass technology, my first choice was tin. The truth is that I have no direct experience with molten metal baths. (nobody is perfect!)
But I think about a parallelepiped bath, 20 times longer than broad with a guiding channel for the reactor in the middle. At one end of the cell the temperature is 1100C at the other 1500 C- e.g. by heating with gas flame - a linear temperature gradient if possible, some smart mechanism to move the cell with the necessary speed from the "cold" end to the hot end. The problem is how to measure the inner temperature of the reactor/cell in the wireless mode- no thermocouples if possible. Perhaps a dome a bit higher than the level of the molten metal level can help- for advanced pyrometric measurements. Can you, friends suggest and other method of non-contact temperature measurement?
Molten metal inside, molten metal outside the high temperature LENR reactor what a nice technical symmetry! And if happen to work...

PS AXIL's essay reminds me that we have to study very carefully the refractory materials for the new types of E-Cats- see the melting points of the next (after Ni) metals from cobalt to tungsten, they will come.

Oil price has always been a roller coaster wagon, depending on infinite factors: for example now the fracking oil and gas discovered in the USA in enormous deposits has lowered the price, together with a decrease of a hydrocarbons consume caused by lower levels of industrial production in the last 3 years in all the world.

Rossi might have found the method to control the E-Cat meltdown mechanism, The X-Cat might have destroyed the alumina tube by overheating. How hot can the X-Cat get anyway? 

Rossi might want to try Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) (Melting point 2,715 °C (4,919 °F; 2,988 K))

. This compound is a ceramic in which the crystal structure of zirconium dioxide is made stable at room temperature by an addition of yttrium oxide. These oxides are commonly called "zirconia" (ZrO2) and "yttria" (Y2O3), hence the name.

It is difficult to solve the heater material problem because most heater elements will oxidize at high temperatures. This is not true for YSZ. Rossi could heat the YSZ tube directly.

Electroceramics is a class of ceramic materials used primarily for their electrical properties. YSZ is an Electroceramic; it conducts electricity well as an fast ion conductor ceramic that has been used in historically for the glowing rods in Nernst lamps.

The Nernst lamp was an early form of incandescent lamp. Nernst lamps did not use a glowing tungsten filament. Instead, they used a ceramic rod that was heated to incandescence. Because the rod (unlike tungsten wire) would not further oxidize when exposed to air, there was no need to enclose it within a vacuum or noble gas environment; the burners in Nernst lamps could operate exposed to the air and were only enclosed in glass to isolate the hot incandescent emitter from its environment. A ceramic of zirconium oxide - yttrium oxide was used as the glowing rod.

 Please read what Rossi, E-CatWorld  and here-AXIL says about  E-Cat X, the hottest E-Cat working above the melting temperature of nickel. Something very new and complex and chaotic: Rossi cannot give details but he has told about the existence of a possibly new branch of LENR. This time I understand his reasons. What I does not understand is how it is possible that no real competition for Rossi exists now.

 Anyway the situation of the very hot E-cat is a mystery and chaos- but it is not the case to bring it under control- not possible and not useful. Very important discoveries can be made  and later these can be explained and extended. 
Obviously Rossi is causing problems, he does not give us certainties even not IP related, things are going very slow, many people and not all trolls do not believe him
and tell me that I am in deep error and a sinner against Science, honest Science, writing about what he says he does.

 BUT imagine LENR without Rossi. Wet PdD remains dominant, Francesco Piantelli's NiH is heavily oppressed. Interesting things but applications are toooo far. No scale-up, no technology. 
January 14, 2011 nothing happens and I start writing a course of Management of Technology for Romanian managers and earn money from translations. I am reading what happens in LENR but it is indistinguishable from hopeless, incremental and stagnant- LENR is a sad, unsmiling, slowly forgotten world. I have promised to Arthur C.Clarke that cold fusion will be a technology but I do  not keep my promise.

E-Cat 1 MW: downloaded to 750 kW of power for reparation of a reactor. Another working night looms up.
E-Cat X: burnt, but we have understood well where is the problem, so we are making another one that very likely will be very reliable. I hope.

 Over on the Rossi blog site, there has recently been a ton of questions asking Rossi what the E-Cat-X is all about. Rossi is silent on that issue. He is very protective about his new collections of IP secrets. And yet, he gave the Lugano crew the Hot cat to play with for a month. To completely give the Lugano testers all his treasured and hard won IP secrets is completely out of character. Rossi must have thought that the Hot Cat was a dead end. Try as he might, Rossi could not get the Hot cat to work, and he gave up on it. He never intended to give anybody the opportunity and the Know-how to replicate any of his work. Does a leopard change its spots? But when Rossi read the Lugano report, he saw something he liked very much, it was something he did not see in all his own extensive Hot cat experiments. He was very surprised, and he took advantage of this very good luck as he has always done. Those new insights that he gleaned from the Lugano report gave him inspiration to invent the E-Cat-X. The tantalizing question that we are faced with: what insight did Rossi get from the Lugano report.

Maybe Rossi gave up on the Hot Cat because, try as he might, he could not get the Hot Cat to work well, So he intended to throw his competitors a curve by showing them a failed test. He used an old fuel load from one of his failed Hot cat tests knowing full well that the Hot Cat would not work to any great extent. But to his surprise, the Lugano crew got the reactor to work anyway beyond all his wildest expectations.

The previously used fuel loaded in the Lugano test showed no build up of Ni62, just run of the mill nickel isotopes, but the Lugano run changed the nickel powder into pure Ni62. We know that Rossi was very surprised by this strange turn of events. Rossi must have thought to himself, what could have caused that miracle? How come I could not do this thing and those Lugano testers could? 

Because they did not want to melt the hot cat down, the Lugano crew let the Hot cat heat for 10 days before they decided to up the temperature. In those first 10 days the Hot cat was a poor performer. Rossi never had the patience to run the Hot cat for so long, he did not have the patience to run such a non productive test for that long. But after those 10 days of gestation, the Lugano crew increased the power and the heat and the Rossi reaction took off.

The power produced by the reactor showed a COP of 7 when the power was increased. Something must have been building up over those 10 days of moderate heat. LENR has always had a history of running for a long time before the reaction sets in. The Palladium guys thought ot was caused by loading hydrogen into palladium, but that was not the case. 

Nano-particles were being created slowly until their numbers reached a critical threshold for the reactor to take off. Without those large 100 micron nickel particles, the nano particle aggregation must be grown large enough to get the power of the reaction over a critical level. That correct level is when the aggregation is big enough to establish a positive feedback loop with the nuclear fusion reactions catalyzed by the aggregation. 

Rossi said to himself, I can just add some of my potassium catalyst to the lithium aluminum hydride to get the nano particles to form faster. 10 days is far to long to wait to start up the Hot cat. Then I could turn on the lithium powder very fast, and I do not need the nickel anymore.
